How to run IE6, IE7 and IE8 on the same PC

If you are a web designer who is perfecting his craft than you must have come across of a cross browser compatibility issue not even once in last couple of years. It’s no wonder that with so many different browsers the website you work on can look differently on Internet Explorer 6,  Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8. Unfortunately Windows does not allow all IE’s running side-by-side on the same machine simultaneously. But wait to smack your head against a brick wall because there is Virtual PC.

Virtual PC is a program that can emulate windows within windows, saying that it can simulate 3 windows within windows, isn’t that awesome? Thus gives you the option to have 3 main Microsoft’s browsers on your PC, without having to run a test on 3 different machines.

How do you get Virtual PC on your computer?

The process is easy:

  1. Download virtual PC from Microsoft website.
  2. Download IE6-XP-SP3.exeIE7-XP-SP3.exe and  IE8-XP-SP3.exe
  3. Install Virtual PC on your computer
  4. Install first Pack – IE6-XP-SP3.exe
  5. Start Virtual PC program and click “New…” button, walk through the “New Virtual Machine Wizard” to the Finish and don’t forget to point your Virtual Hard Drive Location to the location of file that you got by installing IE6-XP-SP3.exe
  6. Repeat point 5 for remaining 2 files.

Making Your Site Both Search Engine and User Friendly

Making Your Site Both Search Engine and User Friendly

Having a good web design is very crucial in order to make a site prominent in the internet. However, there are a lot of considerations that a designer needs to think about when developing a site. One of the biggest issues he need to think about carefully is whether to come up with a user friendly site or one that is made for the search engines.

Indeed, these are two important aspects of web design. The search engine gets your site listed for visitors to see and the visitors are the ones are the ones responsible for making your site a success. However, this two often come in conflict with each other. A “Flashy” site that attracts users will often be undetected by search engines. On the other hand, one that is solely designed for the search engines might actually be as drab as plain text.

Thus, the web designer must know how to balance between the two. One of the first things that he can work on in doing this is the site’s content. Often, many sites favor content that is more easily indexed by the search engines in order to place higher in the ranking page. However, this can be easily remedied by making sure that your content also caters to what your target audience wants to see. For instance, your articles must not only be there to provide places to put in keywords for the search engines, but also to provide information to users.

Visitors to your site must also find that your site is easy to use. Make sure that all the impore in use.

On the other hand, you also need to make sure that your site gets indexed and listed in the search engines, which in turn will make your site more visible to your target audience. Here, your goal is to make sure that all the important sections of your site can be easily tracked by search engine spiders. Thus you need to optimize this a lot.

You also need to work on the features that attract visitor attention and optimize them for easier detection by search engines. For instance, you can make Flash applications, which are not easily crawled by spiders, more visible by attaching text that you can optimize to it.

Remember that you need to make sure that both elements are important in creating your site and you need to make good use of both in order to come up with a successful one.

Major points on web hosting and web design

Major points on web hosting and web design

Both web design and web hosting are considered important tasks while creating a web site. Web design means creating web pages. Elements such as text, graphics, images, font sizes and colors are used in designing and producing pages for a web site. It’s important to know that there’s more that goes into websites than just graphics and text.

Other services include creating flash, animation and e-commerce functionality. Flash introduction is a popular web design service, presenting the site’s visitors with a short piece of animated content. E-commerce is another important web design service for web design purpose which can range from basic online shopping to user-friendly and integrated purposes. Other e-commerce functions include shopping carts from which users can view the items they’ve chosen and their total costs before proceeding to checkout.

Web hosting is a process where designed web pages can be viewed by any person who uses internet. Web hosting is a service which allocates space for customers to showcase their websites on computer servers that are connected to the Internet 24/7. There are different types of web hosting. For professional purposes also there are web hosting services that offer commercial packages that bundle business tools, like point of sales packages and credit card processing. Web hosting company can work on contract basis with individuals to provide bandwidth and space on a server where the website can ab design and hosting are one and the same.

But this is not right. Both are two different things. But one company can provide both types of service. It is also possible to purchase web design and hosting services from two different vendors. If anyone is interested in creating or reworking an existing web site they should investigate both options and determine which solution would work best.

PHP vs. ASP

PHP vs. ASP

Ever since Microsoft has come up with ASP.net, there has been a widespread debate among programmers as to whether it is any better than the existing open source programming language of PHP.

If you were to make a search on the Internet on how loyalists of both PHP and ASP.net are doing almost everything by biting each other’s heads off, you will realize how hot this debate actually is. The major contention is that Microsoft products are generally considered to be superior to other products, but then there are programmers that have been using PHP since ages and never once has it let them down. While there is acclaim for ASP.net being more robust and speedier, PHP fans maintain that PHP has much better support and a very easy to understand language.

As the debate between PHP and ASP.net rages on, it is important to make a frank comparison between the two languages, so that other developers who are not so strong in their opinions are not caught in the argument between the two. Here are some of the important points that distinguish the two programming languages from each other:-

(For the uninitiated, PHP stands for Hypertext Preprocessor and ASP.net stand for Active Server Pages. It helps to put things into better perspective!)

» PHP is a relatively simpler language to use than ASP.net. Initially, PHP was written in the C programming language to replace a set of scripts in Perl. That is the reason why coding in PHP remains simple even today. Many developers find themselves to be more at ease with the user-friendly nature of PHP when it comes to coding. However, critics also count this advantage of PHP as a disadvantage. Some of them maintain that the language of PHP has not been updated much, and hence it is still quite archaic and even, somewhat cumbersome for coding. ASP.net, which is a relatively new development, has a lot of options when it comes to languages. Here, you can use languages such as C#, J#, C++ and VB.net. Hence, when it comes to sheer choice, ASP.net has better to offer. But PHP is no less, since it can do its task quite well, even with its minimum language tools.

» PHP is has much better support for the database management system, MySQL. In fact, the very popular blogging platform, WordPress uses the formidable combination of PHP coding on MySQL for its content management system, which includes about hundreds of thousands of blog posts every single day. Another very popular and frequently updated service that uses the combination of PHP and MySQL is Wikipedia. ASP.net can also support MySQL, but PHP is unanimously hailed, by the masses and classes alike, for its great support for this database management system.

» People who use both PHP and ASP.net also maintain their opinion that PHP is better for embedded support with another database management system, viz. SQLite. SQLite is described as a relational database management system and since it is contained in a C programming library, PHP can provide better support to it.

» PHP has also a very good support for object oriented programming, on which whole scripting languages are being built nowadays. ASP.net also provides very capable support to OOP.

» When it comes to support, PHP wins over ASP.net. The main reason for this is that PHP is open source. Hence, the support can come freely from all over the world. In most cases, PHP fixes are made instantly. Being open source also ensures that there are very few snags in PHP. While, ASP.net could take a while to make fixes. That is because it is owned by Microsoft, and it is the development team of Microsoft that will need to respond to the support query. That could take more time than the worldwide open source support that PHP is able to get. Most PHP supports can be instantly found online by doing a simple search on the Internet. Some of the providers of support for PHP are Zend, NuSphere and ThinkPHP.

» PHP can use the command line to perform many everyday activities. Some of the things that the PHP command line is useful for is for manipulating across many files and for putting files into multiple directories at once. These are just some of the important features that PHP’s command line is used for.

» PHP is an open source programming language, which means it is free for anyone to use. Programmers can develop PHP applications virtually at no cost, because PHP is free to use. ASP.net is not free too, but its extensions are available for free on Windows platforms, upwards of 98. Hence, ASP.net is available to Windows users when they buy it. That puts a bit of restriction in its use.

» ASP.net is compiled into memory in binary code. So, when ASP.net is used for coding, it is evident that it takes much longer time to process since the codes need to be retrieved from memory. However, PHP is not compiled into memory like ASP.net is. It is interpreted at runtime. That is the reason why PHP coding leads to better speed and even efficiency. However, it must be said that both PHP and ASP.net can run at supreme speeds and efficiency when they are coded expertly.

» Talking about hosting charges, both PHP and ASP.net are quite cheap to host. If you do a good deal of shopping online, you will also be able to find hosting for as little as $4. While there are several pricier hosting services out there, their charges are higher for both PHP and ASP.net. Hence, it can be said that both PHP and ASP.net are at par with each other on the hosting charges.

» Since PHP is older, there are many people who claim that it is much more secure than ASP.net where coding is concerned. ASP.net is much new, and the security options may not be fully in place yet. However, many programmers will pooh-pooh at this point, because they maintain that security in coding does not depend on the language that is used, but in the way that the coding is done by the coder. Even so, there is a lot of talk on the Internet about PHP coded sites being more difficult to hack into than those done with ASP.net.

Hence, there is a lot to debate on about the worthiness of PHP over ASP.net or vice-versa. There is probably no end to it, and there never shall be. The problem mainly is that both of them are good in their own place, but people who have been staunchly using PHP for several years now – some of them for more than a decade – would certainly not like to go in for the new ASP.net. The price to be paid is quite high, i.e. learning a whole new syntax and getting used to it. That is more the reason why PHP is still so popular.

But, to ASP.net’s credit it must be said that it is much more dynamic, even if the mere use of different languages are concerned. While PHP is still stuck to its scripting language days, ASP.net has broken new grounds by entering into new languages, and even developing some of its own. However, a new shadow is looming large on these language-programming tools – the coming of the WYSIWYG editors such as Dreamweaver, which are making coding a very simple task to do for even the lay computer user.

12 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before Hiring a Web Designer

12 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before Hiring a Web Designer

Creating a website is a complex task, especially if you are going to do it for the first time. Below I  you will find some questions that you should ask yourself before picking up a phone and calling your web designer. I hope this will help you:

1. Why do you want to have a new website, or have your current site redesigned? Asking this question will help you to  uncover most of the reasons for getting in touch with your web designer.  Remember that it’s not always clear for ourselves why do we really want to do what we want to do until we start putting it all on paper.

2. Please describe your organization in a few sentences. Since this answer will be something like an elevator speech,  it could be incorporated into the home page copy.

3. What is there about you and your background that sets you apart for a special (niche) group of potential customers? If nothing else, this is a question that gets you thinking.   It might be that you’ve been in business twice as long as any of your competitors. Or that your customers stay with you for an average of 10 years.

4. What problems do your prospects have that your business solves? Answer to this question will become a Services section of your future website.

5. Do you have a slogan or tagline that clearly describes what you offer in terms of benefits or features? Headline is always the first thing that your customers will see. This is your chance to tell them who you are and what you do before they decide to go further or leave your website forever.

6. Please describe your potential customers. Pay special attention to their income, interests, gender, age, even type of computer they use, e.g., old with dialup account or newer with broadband. If your website is a business-to-business site, what sort of companies are you hoping to attract? You will be surprised how answer to this question can narrow down the requirements for website design. For instance if demographic of visitors of your website are elderly people, size of the text must be at least 25% bigger then regular.

7. Please list the names of five other sites that you like. Why are they attractive to you?

8. Do you have a logo? If you don’t have a logo or have an old one, it is a good idea to ask your web designer who has artistic skills to design a new one for your future website.

9. Are you planning to do online sales? If so, what is the product, and how many items do you want to sell online?

10. If you’re planning to sell online, are you set up to accept credit cards? Getting set up to accept credit cards can take time. There are many options available today, choosing the right one won’t be a problem.

11. If you were using a search engine, what words or phrases would you use to find your site? Which of these words or phrases is most important? Second? Third? Avoid impossibly long list of search terms. Instead, to come up with a reasonable list – say, three to five terms. If you have problems with this point contact your Search Engine specialist.

12. Other than what search engines will produce, what methods do you have in mind to spread the word about your website? There was a time when a website was such a novelty that you could get newspaper stories written about the fact that you had one. (Newspapers – remember them?) These days, you’ll need to do a bit more planning. Although some of its information is a bit dated, Ralph Wilson’s Planning Your Internet Marketing Strategy is a helpful book.
